"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured." So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel by Gregory David Roberts, set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Gripping from first to last page. Amazing story that I didn't put down until completed. Luckily I was travelling when this book found me which allowed me to unplug from the world. Note: everyone I have ever recommended this book to has loved it.

A long read but every page is full of action, emotion, and adventure! It's based on a true story and Roberts' poetic style makes you fall in love with the characters in his world. After reading this, it made me want to go to India.

Unputdownable. I carried this beast through the Himalayas and found myself staying up late and waking early to turn another page.
